MIT conference: held february 3-4, 2001 a conversation with teachers about changes in the classroom and a showcase for innovative work
The Women in Technology (WIT) Project, at Vermont Technical College, is committed to encouraging young wome in middle school and high school to study math, science and technology and to explore opportunities for careers in these fields. Through our Summer Technology Camps, Speakers Bureau, and many other programs, we help girls, parents and teachers dispel stereotypes and overcome barriers to girls' educational and career success. Workshop: Website Development Each summer, WIT conducts four technology camps for Vermont girls that include hands-on workshops taught by women scientists, engineers, and technicians. This workshop in web development focuses on teaching kids to:
- understand how and why to optimize web sites; to communicate
- - not only with your target market but with the
Internet's search engines, robots and spiders.- learn file management (why is that URL so long? - it doesn't have to be)
- bookmarks - understand how to manage research and web resources
- learning the fundamentals of web publishing (HTML)
- team building, (identify skills needed and build your dot.com)
- Be aware and understand Copyright Law
( No you can't just "take" that image but you can ask! )- research, writing and editing code,
- designing a well-structured site,(Navigation, Content, Fast loading images)
- get your email from anywhere
- how to launch your site into cyberspace on the server (ftp)
- Most of all.... How to be safe in cyberspace
- 9-12 hrs. later... 1st try at a web site
